HomePlug Powerline Alliance hits key milestones in 2010 and demonstrates at CES 2011.(EVENTS)

The HomePlug Powerline Alliance, an industry group promoting adoption of powerline home networking products, demonstrated its market-proven broadband and smart energy powerline network technology at CES 2011 in Las Vegas. HomePlug's theme is "Delivering Today, Defining Tomorrow," which reflects the wide adoption of HomePlug's current AV and Green PHY powerline technology and new and developing HomePlug AV2 technology that will define tomorrow's interoperable solutions.

The Alliance showcased innovative products and technologies from multiple member companies at its powerline networking technology pavilion, including:

- Interoperable HDTV distribution

- Home entertainment and whole-home audio systems

- Smart energy demonstrations

- Connectivity for other applications including over-the-top video, gaming, Internet access and security cameras

This marks the end of a very exciting and productive year for the Alliance, with a number of key milestones having taken place in 2010, including:

- The addition of Broadcom Corporation, Duke Energy and STMicroelectronics to the board of directors

- Completion of the Green PHY specification for Smart Grid/Smart Home applications

- Key liaison agreements signed with the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) and the Wi-Fi Alliance

- Ratification of the IEEE 1901 power line standard which uses HomePlug AV as a baseline technology

- Completion of exhaustive interna tional field trials and key technology advances for the next-generation HomePlug AV2 technology

- Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) selecting HomePlug Green PHY as a leading communications protocol for connecting smart appliances in the home

"2010 saw great achievements for the Alliance with the ratification of the IEEE 1901 powerline standard and the completion of our Green PHY specification," said Rob Ranck, president of the HomePlug Powerline Alliance.

"In 2011, we will continue to cement our place as the world market leader for powerline networking, with the completion of our nextgeneration AV2 technology and the accelerating adoption of HomePlug broadband and smart energy technology worldwide."

The HomePlug technology family includes HomePlug AV, the solution for home broadband applications, HomePlug "Green PHY" (GP) targeting smart home and smart grid applications, and the forthcoming nextgeneration HomePlug AV2, which will deliver Gigabit-class performance while maintaining backwards interoperability with AV and GP devices. All three specifications are compliant with, and fully interoperable with, the IEEE 1901 powerline standard.

HomePlug devices account for more than 80 percent of the world's broadband powerline communications market and over 65 million devices have shipped to date.

The alliance works with key stakeholders to ensure all of its specifications are designed to meet the requirements of IPTV service providers, power utilities, equipment and appliance manufacturers, consumer electronics and other important stakeholders.

HomePlug operates the powerline networking industry's largest Compliance and Interoperability Certification Program to ensure true multivendor coexistence and interoperability.

The program has certified more than 220 products and is now certifying IEEE 1901 products.
