pounds THE gap between becoming mortgage-free and stopping work is shrinking, according to Santander Saving. Those who took out their first mortgage between 2000 and 2010 will now have a "window" of just 10 years to save for retirement.

pounds THE taxman is urging people to be vigilant following a surge of fake emails sent out by fraudsters following the January 31 self-assessment deadline. They claim you are due a tax rebate and provides a link to a replica of the HMRC website. You are then asked for your credit card details with fraudsters using the information to take money from your account.

pounds PEOPLE are happier buying their mobile phones on the internet than on the high street. Eight out of ten said they were happier placing their orders online, citing poor customer service and bad value for money at retail outlets, according to comparison site uSwitch.com.

pounds THE number of us saying we have no spare cash has risen to 27 per cent, according to the latest consumer confidence survey by the British Retail Consortium. At the end of last year the figure was 21 per cent and it is now at its highest level since the survey began six years ago.

pounds SANTANDER has launched its latest range of fixed rate bonds which includes a threeyear fixed rate paying 4.01 per cent. The bonds can be opened with a minimum investment of pounds 1. The one-year bond pays 2.75 per cent on pounds 1, while the two year bond pays 3.30 per cent.
