NSW: Public Prosecutors to strike despite govt efforts

Public prosecutors plan to strike tomorrow despite last-minute efforts by the New SouthWales government to ward off the industrial action and prevent upheaval in the court system.

The government has called an urgent hearing at the NSW Industrial Relations Commissiontonight, to request an order that the strike not go ahead.

The hearing was called after a similar session at the IRC this afternoon was unsuccessfulin heading off the intended action.

The Public Service Association says around 300 staff of the NSW Director of PublicProsecutions will rally outside courthouses instead of going to work tomorrow.

They're protesting over staffing cuts made last week which the union says will causedelays to the court system and increase the workload for the DPP's remaining 600 administrativeand legal employees.

Rallies will begin outside courthouses across greater Sydney at 9am (AEST), with thelargest expected to be staged outside the Downing Centre in central Sydney.
