ROADWORK COULD TAKE A TOLL ON DRIVERS.(MAIN)

Tolls on the Northway? Don't laugh.

With the $2.6 billion the state raises for road and bridge projects each year from gas taxes, fees and other sources likely insufficient to cover anticipated big-ticket projects, state Transportation Commissioner Joseph Boardman said making motorists pay to drive interstates in New York is one possible solution.

``I think it's one of the things we have to look at'' if the federal government extends more authority for states to collect tolls on interstates, Boardman said Tuesday. ``I think we are running out of time to decide what the next financial program needs to be.'' …
